ENPA statement on importance of preserving media pluralism across the EU

The European Newspaper Publishers' Association (ENPA) is following closely the criminal procedures against Bulgarian media owner Ivo Prokopiev, of Economedia group, for accusations on public statements that he made as a member of a consultative public body.

It is vital that due legal process is properly followed to allay any suspicions of an arbitrary political motivation for the prosecution of Mr Prokopiev, whose media are known as sources of independent and quality journalism in Bulgaria.

Pluralism and freedom of the media must be preserved and respected throughout the European Union.

Valdo Lehari Jr., Vice-President of ENPA said : «Press publishers call for the respect of rule of law, independent journalism and press freedom. We are very concerned about the situation in certain EU countries where press freedom has been under serious threat».

Carlo Perrone, ENPA President said : «We caution against any deterioration of the media freedom situation in Bulgaria that will put the future of independent journalism in peril. ENPA strongly advocates for media pluralism, editorial independence and an economically sustainable press sector.».
